Warning... I am a dog lover, if you are not, this may sound silly. My Hunter girl, an joyful, energetic, and sweetheart Greman Shorthaired Pointer (11 years old) had surgery today to remove 5 masses. 4 seem to be benign lypomas the 5th is suspicious for cancer. We won't know for 5 days. Tonight I am sad.

I think that there is nothing more important things in life than love, and the love of and for a dog is one of the best kinds.
My friend who ran sled dogs once told me that the sorrow we feel when our dogs go is the price we pay for the joy they give us while they are here. It is at once a great price, and a small one.
Good luck, and I hope your Hunter girl is enjoying life as she always has.
p.s. our Lily has a mass. they have done a needle biopsy, they say it is benign, but we are not confident as the mass seems to be growing.

fish,
It might be a lipoma, very common, benign but they can grow large. They should be removed if they impede movement or cause pain otherwise --no worries. hunter had 4 of those.
Sue,
Smoke must have been a wonderful dog for you to use her moniker for so long.
Pam and all,
thanks for the good wishes and prayers.
Update: Hunter was in great pain this morning, not eating or drinking . I was getting water in her with a baster. Went to the vet and $70 later they injected subcutaneous fluid, gave me anti-inflammatories and pain meds for her. I had to carry her in from the car because she was NOT going back into that place. At 48 pounds of unwilling dog, full of stitches that was no small feat! When we got home she was happy, drank a bowl of water and has been a-ok ever since. Go figure! I will learn at the end of next week what the suspicious lump was...

Good thing your working out! I remember when I took Smoke to be fixed...she always was eager to go for a ride in the car (unlike the 2 mongrals I have now, Fuzz & Whiskers but that's another story..they hate the car and they are not afraid to let me know that for 30 minutes each way to the vet)
Anyway...the first time we went back to the vet after she was fixed she knew where she was and didn't want anything to do with going in.
Glad to hear that Hunter is doing a bit better tonight.

She is great. She never knew to worry, that was my job. She is a very happy dog. Really she has very few emotions, happy, scared and content. Mostly happy.

Silly q but is Hunter a hunter?
Smoke liked duck hunting and she was a pretty good squirl dog...not that labs are known for that. Squirles would be in the yard alot and aggrevate her, I think when we took her hunting for them it was more of her way of getting back.

We don't hunt, but she does! From a pup she would point at the birds and stay in point until we said "BANG" then would run and chase them. The squirrels torment her so when she has a chance to catch one she does and plays with it till it can't play anymore (if you get my drift...). She was rescued and while extremely sweet and gentle she has issues with loud noises. She cringes when the toaster pops or the icemaker drops ice. And storms...forget it she hids in her kennel and shakes. I don't know how hunters get a dog through "gun shy", I doubt she would have made it as a true hunting dog. She just loves to run and we have a 5 acre dog park nearby that is perfect for her.
