What do you-all think about this scenario ?
About 10 miles into a 15 mile ride. Just cruising, turning about 70 , going about 18 - I am too comfortable cranking at a low 70 since I warm up on the stationary bike all winter at that rate - and this rider smooths by.
I notice a number of things, roughly in this order: Female, about 26, aero helmet, wrap around sunglasses, elite ultra bike, optic spandex everywhere, clip in shoes, turning about 90.
Clearly this is a serious rider ! It immediately occurs to me that this is a chance to broaden my knowledge by observation, so I drop in behind her, now turning about 80.
I am watching her form. I am trying to see if there is any advantage to her spandex over my cargo pants, T shirt and road workers vest. I want to know whether I should trade in my cons with broken toe cages for clip in racing shoes. Do I really need riding gloves ? I am watching her posterior action to figure her technique. I want to see if I will be able to drive harder if my seat height matches hers.
I spend a couple of three miles learning. But by the time we get to a really nice slope, I’ve learned enough.
So I pass her going away up the hill.
Now Nancy says that it was all typical male. She suggests that I was leching when I was behind, and that I only passed her on the hill because boys can’t stand girls riding ahead.
Well, I never !!
What do you think ?

Fish I think you are going to be out numbered on this one. I have to agree with Nancy. One has to wonder how much you would have noticed if it were a 26 year old male riding by??
But curious, what did you learn?

One more thing:
"....watching her posterior action to figure her technique."
"I want to see if I will be able to drive harder if my seat height matches hers."
Just wanted to point out that there are SO many things I could do with this post but I am going to be a lady and let it all...slide.

Pam, I'm shocked, SHOCKED.
Moi ?
Jack, defend me !
What did I learn ?
Perhaps the girl is a bit of an exhibitionist.
But then again, who is not ?
Perhaps she should have either stayed behind me or run away. But then, perhaps she was just going her speed.
From my point of view don't just sit there unless you want to be viewed ... Well, she did not exactly just sit there.
Perhaps she was waiting for me to try to pass so she could shut me down.
No foul there.
I think maybe we both had fun, two bikes passing in the night.
Ah, life is so wonderful, and so sad.
I suppose I am just happy to have the chance to delude myself that I am not completely invisible to 26 year old girls.
fish
p.s. Yesterday I had to stop to adjust my shifters, and as I was coming back up to speed a 30 ish guy in optic velcro, etc., etc., etc., slid past. (are they getting paid for all the advertising they wear on their skin suits ? do they at least get the suits for free ? why wear wrap-around sunglasses when it is cloudy ? I mean, what's up with all that ? )
Anyroad, I admit that I did not spend as much time behind him.
I guess old men with white beards invite challenges from all comers.
Heh, heh.

Fish, You're on your own on this one . I'm just glad you didn't pay any attention to the second biker.

Good point there Jack.
You mention about not being invisable to a 26 year old girl.....would luv to know her thoughts as you were infront of her.
If nothing else Fish I'm sure it raised your heart rate a bit more.

Smoke,
What were her thoughts ? Of course I don't know for sure, but there is this.
As we were walking on the beach with my boy and his wife I laughingly mentioned the incident, along with the wistful awareness that I have become invisible to 20ish girls.
My new daughter told me to look ahead down the beach. She said that the very first thing all those girls could see was a long grey beard.
She then stated the obvious: Any guy with your long grey beard is instantly invisible to all young women.
She went on to point out that the girl on the bike first saw me from behind.
She then stated: Any guy with your legs and buns is instantly visible to all women.
What a sweet girl my boy married !

ps Or maybe it's just that I'm the same ass I've always been.

Quite honestly Fish...no matter what the age, grey or not I almost always will take a second look at a guy with a beard.
