Why we do this?
Stay fit, I mean.
Sunday on the second annual singletrack ride with 5 guys. Stream crossing with gnarley steep banks on both sides. Misread the line, take that wrong line, fail in execution. Crash. Blood, bruises, but nothing really serious.
Gets me thinking. This is why I spend all that time staying in condition.
Other examples out of many adventures ...
In the kayaks coming in from an ocean tour. Nancy is in front. Wind comes up about 25 knots. Despite her best efforts, she is being carried by a cross wind and rip into breakers over shoals. I have to paddle between her and the breakers and push the front of her boat through the wind so she will be carried away from the hazard. Failure will have serious consequences. After a moment of doubt, it is nice to realize that I have sufficient strength for the move. An experience not to be missed.
Second day of a screaming nor'easter blizzard. Strap on the snowshoes and go for a nice walk in the woods in three feet of snow. Make it to the place where the deer are yarded up. Stand there watching for a while, and then walk home. This takes a little more strength than I expected but is another experience not to be missed.
There are lots and lots of reasons to train. Being able to do stuff is mine.
What are yours ?

I've been asking myself that question a lot lately, especially with what I've been going through lately. I started out because I wanted to lose weight and get strong. Somewhere along the way I became addicted. Being able to keep up with 3 kids is a big part of why I keep at it despite all the setbacks I've had the last year and a half. I also want to at least stand a chance should the need arise for me to have to defend myself or my kids.
So I guess you summed it up pretty good fish, I do this so I am able to do "stuff".

You forgot to add and to show off for all the girls Jack. Just my opinion but I'd say you're already a strong dude...notice I left out the old. What's that worth?

"I also want to at least stand a chance should the need arise for me to have to defend myself or my kids.".
God forbid you should ever have to do this. But keep training ! Because sooner or later we all wind up having to defend ourselves FROM our kids. Nature's way, you know.
Peace and serenity to you,

I may be just a little biased here but my kids are the greatest! They are my biggest fans. I used to weigh a whole lot more than I do now and they stood by me and encouraged me every step of the way...and still do. They are the best. I would defend them with my life if the need arose...lets just hope I've learned enough to avoid that.
