I need to start upping my cardio. Keep posting your workouts so I stay inspired.
What's a "C II warm up"?

C II is the Concept II rowing machine.
I also have a nordicTrac ski machine and a tunturi stationary bicycle, but if I could only have one, it would be the C2.
Was at my sister's in Florida for the past few days and bro-in-law has an Alden ocean shell. So the C2 carried over to the water and I got in some very good cardio.
Pam, do you have a step, and have you done step aerobics ? If you have a step, I can suggest a number of killer tapes which combine aerobics and weight training.
Anyone who says a good step tape is sissy stuff, well, let us see them do it.
And the step and tapes are inexpensive.
Great winter workouts (I live in Maine) to supplement weight training.
Variety is one of my priime motivators.
Keep the faith,
Fish

Fish, I used to have a step but that was when my knees were really bad so I sold it. I have since learned that one must never sell their exercise equipment. I hadnt thought of doing a step aerobic program. That might be a nice change of pace for me. I'm getting sick of the treadmill and am really in great need of a change. I bet I could find a used step at a garage sale too. I am going to have to keep an eye out for one. I'd be interested the tapes you'd suggest. Alden ocean shell, is that one of those boats that you have to squeeze yourself into? Thanks

I guess the boat one squeezes into is the Kayak. A shell is one of those row boats with a sliding seat and very long oars. Sorta like the ones in the olympics, but the Alden is for the ocean. On the videos, Cathe Friedrich has the most strenuous cardio, weight, and combo cardio/weight tapes that I know of. Get details at www.cathe.com or the two sites below. We have Body Max and Maximum Intensity Strength. Karen Voight - Great Weighted Workout. The Firm - Tough Tape, Standing Legs Lots of reviews of lots of tapes at www.videofitness.com and www.collagevideo.com. When you re-buy your step, be sure that you can comfortably lie on it to do supine stuff, or that your bench can be close to your step area and where you can see the video screen. The weights used can be limited so that the shoulder movement on the bench is not an issue and this without seriously compromising the workout. Peace, Fish

I think I'll stick to a cardio only tape. Is the Body Max tape you have a step tape and if so is it dancy? I am totally uncoordinated. Way back when my aerobics instructor tried so hard to help me get the moves down and ended up doing what I wanted to do in the beginning...stand at the back of the class so I could just do my own thing. I think I got a better workout than the rest of the class back there though. Thats one reason I stay away from tapes, they are just all too dancy.

Nope, I don't like dancey ones either. Favorite is "Step Reebok, the Video" with Gin Miller. This tape used to come with the Reebok step, the package for $65 - 100 new. Not dancey. Next is "Energy Sprint" with Karen Voight. This one has some light dumbbell work at the end, but is a great step tape. Not dancey with only one trickey move in 40 minutes. Kelly Roberts has "Real Fitness: Ultimate Step" Not dancey. "Body Max" is by Cathe Friedrich. She is dancey, but she gives great workouts. Suggestion: go to www.videofitness.com. On the right hand side of the home screen click on favorites. Go to Hall of Fame. Click on any title and get all the reviews for that tape. Suggestion: go to www.collagevideo.com. There you can find the videos broken out by difficulty of choreography. The step is great for me when my motivation is low. Put in the tape, do the drill, when it's finished, you're finished. Be sure to get a good step with at least three levels. We have the Reebok step and Step Company step. Both good. Pax, Fish

Thanks a lot for the info fish, I appreciate it. I think I'll head on out today and see if I can find a used step at one of the used sporting goods stores we have here. I've seen them before and they look brand new, but of course now that I want one they wont have any. I'm actually excited about cardio again...never thought I'd say that. Yes Jack, you read that right. I dont mind cardio if I'm playing tennis, or hiking, but it can get so boring on that treadmill. From your posts I'm assuming youre married, do you workout with your wife? Always thought it would be wonderful to have someone to workout with. Especially when my motivation is low. Thanks again.

Pam,
Well, one of the things about the videos is that at least one gets to hear and see other people.
It is important not to be turned off if you get a talking head you hate. Just get rid of that particular video and get another. The videos I mentioned I have done a godzillion times without cringing at a line or a phrase or whatever.
Nancy, my present incarnation of the goddess and official love of my life, took an L 3-4 last year. We have restructured our exercise to recondition her back. We now walk, but wait till next year !
Speaking of walking, since Nancy has her back we have begun to race walk. At eleven minute miles we move right along. Tough stuff for me. We had to get access to a book since the technique is, well, technical. But it changes everything over the road or on a treadmill. Your mind is not overwhelmed as it can be when you run. Your mind is telling your legs, et al, to do it, but they can't. In that respect it is much more like weights than like jogging. Progress is easily measurable and gratifying. And there are lots of other benes. Walking and talking is good for our soul. In the summer, bright and warm. In the winter, the stars in the cold, crisp mornings. And Lilly the wonder dog lets us keep her company.
You mention tennis and hiking. I find tennis to be good for my humility, and hiking to be good for just about eveything else. I got into the flora and fauna that surrounds the hiking experience. It is a great shared activity with Nancy and with her kids and with my kids. Great fun to find and identify the flowers in the summer and the animal tracks in the snow. And all the other beauties of all the other seasons, too.
We exercise so we can do stuff.
Keep the faith.
