Lily is gone.
She was a member here. Her workouts with me are posted over the years. So I thought I would let you know.
Just before hunting season, while chasing a ball, Lily took an injury.
There was no local sensitivity, so I thought it was a sprain.
Daily walks on the beach (hunting season) Lily would chase the seagulls into the water. She was active in the woods on Sundays too.
So she seemed to be getting better, with occasional pangs.
Then some people we know came to the house on Saturday 12/3 and Lily gave her usual greeting and she really hurt herself.
Lily was unable to bear any weight on her left hind leg and was in real pain.
No sleep from then until that Monday morning.
On Monday Vet thought it was a cruciate ligament.
He scheduled x-rays for Tuesday, 12/6.
That Monday night our Lily was in such pain that even with the Vet's pain killers she could not lie down. She stood all night, putting her head in Nancy's lap to close her eyes for some rest.
It was bad.
On Tuesday 8:00 am we were waiting for the Vet to open.
She had to be anesthetized to tolerate the x-rays so we left her at the office for the procedure.
Vet called before we got home.
The X-rays showed osteosarcoma, bone cancer.
He wanted to meet us in his office at 11:45 am.
That gave me time to do a search on the net.
Very bad news there.
The literature said that the cancer had undoubtedly metastasized and that if we wanted our dog to live more than days we would have to have her leg and part of her hip girdle amputated and submit her to radiation and chemo.
Even if we amputated her leg and hip and subjected her to chemo and radiation it was still odds on that she would die of one or another cancer within a year.
Through our tears Nancy and I had discussed the options before we went to the Vet's office .
I have seen many x rays. These were shocking.
The poor Vet. He started babbling to Nancy and me about sedating the dog, taking her home, and ...
I had to control myself.
"Christ (That's his name. is heritage is Greek), Christ, please, stop. Here is the information we have. "
I give him the disease and treatment info we had gotten from our research.
"Is the information we have accurate and complete, or am I missing something that would change the outcome ?"
He confirmed the information.
"Then I don't understand. What are you talking about, sedate the dog and take her home ? What does that mean ? How does that work for my dog ?"
I guess I have to sympathize with him. How does one do a meeting like that ? What can one say ?
I guess the Vet was trying to meet the needs of the people instead of the needs of the dog.
So we put her down.
I am still a mess and my poor Nancy is worse.
Lily haunts the house, the grounds, the woods, the beach, she is still everywhere.
Day and night, awake and asleep, I see her.
She was my constant companion for most of her life.
NoOne and NoThing belongs to us. God does not give us our people and our things, He only lends them. The pain we suffer when we lose them is the price we pay for the joy we have while we have them.
I want my Lily back. But I can't have her.
Sometimes it is not easy to Keep the Faith.
But we must.
Thank you God, for lending me Lily.
