You guys ever use those? Kids got me some when we were up north. Haven't used them yet, kids apparently wont walk with me when I use them. Am I going to look like a fool walking around the lake with these? Never really run into anyone on my walks anyway I guess, I dont want to look silly though Or maybe I shouldn't really care...

i have a number of walking sticks and poles.
for hiking...
get an old broomstick. just short of shoulder high. get a bicycle handlebar grip, you know, one of those plastic or rubber grips with molded finger grooves. fit the grip over the rounded end of the broomstick (or old rake handle kind of thing). go for a walk. you'll be happy.
if you want, you can get on of those old furniture foot metal disk-with-a-nail thingees and put it on the ground end.
for serious hiking get a heavier rake handle shoulder high or higher. mine is too thick to permit the bike handle trick, but you want the length to be able to use it on descending walks. it has to be longer so you can reach down, plant the stick, and use it for support as you descend. think quarterstaff.
for street walking, get old ski poles. the handles should be just the same height as cross country ski poles would be if you were on skis. take the baskets off the bottoms of the poles. use tape to increase the diameter of the tip of the pole to accept rubber cane tips which you can get at the drug store. pole away while walking, or even better while in line roller skating (which is what i made them for in the first place.)
try those and come back if they don't work. i've got more.

Ok what the heck happened to my post? I didn't write the first paragraph, weird. Fish, I have the poles already, kids bought them for me. They are adjustable so I'll have to do some research and see how to size poles. Don't cc ski so not sure how long those poles are. My problem....I'm not secure but still going to use them. Really would like to know how my post got changed.
