I know Pam & I are in the same boat with this...Not sure if Fish has this issue or not.
My Dad has H-Pylori, ulcers, acid reflux and whatever else wrong with his gut. Last week he was having alot of issus, indigestion, pain, ect...so I told him take some digestive enzymes and a good pro biotic. Gave him what he needed. He has been taking the enzymes but he said he didn't feel good on the pro biotic ( personally it was the crap that he ate that was causing the discomfort not the pro biotic)...speaking of crap...He goes through at least 4 6 pack bottles of diet Mt Dew every week...told him give that up alone and you'll feel 100% beter.
So he went and did his usual shopping this morning...the only thing that was remotly good was the piece of watermellon and yogurt he got for my mom. about 4 packs of cookies, ice cream sandwiches, 2 bags of corn chips, a dozen hard rolls, hot dogs, lunch meat, box of sweet & low..OMG no wonder you don't feel good!!! I'm sick to my stomach just putting it away!
So what are we supposed to do for them?

i often drink too much beer, and when i do i don't feel good the next day.
not hung over, mind you, but generally not good.
but i do it again.
just plain stupid.
it is a habit that i am working on, and making progress.
the issue is replacement, i think. i do better when i have carbonated water available.
so maybe you can find a replacement that they will be willing to use, and then keep it immediately available.
i make the water before i it gets to drinking time.

we'uns all of us become habituated to certain things.
your suggestion about wheat is an example.
i eat a lot of gluten. a lot. a very very lot.
as a general rule, i think that there is a sort of a desperation that comes with getting older. not much time left now, more and more body parts are working less and less well. discomfort, if not pain, is a constant companion.
God grant us all a happy death.
and so the things that brought comfort over the years become more and more difficult to do without.
sorta like getting your blankie back at 65.
not to mention the habit factor.
not to mention the "why stop now" factor.
"i've been smoking for 50 years and no matter what i'll be dead in 15, so why stop now" sort of thinking.
your folks eat the comfort food because it comforts them.
i eat my bread because it has been the staff of my life.
not an easy thing to do, change.
but i'll try.
keep the faith.

Maybe we should all join together and give up the wheat!

I already have been grain free for over a year and I'll tell ya, when I have the occasional piece or two of pizza, my stomach is killing me. After I gave up grain my edema went away and this awful itching I've had or years is gone, no more eczema either. Also some other bennies but I won't share those It's really not as hard as you think. I use cabbage for bread and have made a couple pretty decent grain free bread recipes. In fact making Tanner grain free pumpkin muffins and me some blueberry today.
