today heard & saw what i thought was a juvenile loon.
first an unfamiliar but certainly loon call from my left (starboard, actually, since one faces backwards when rowing) then a response from my right. then a bird running with wings and feet over the water, left to right.
then when i came into shore i saw my familiar mama duck and knew her 6 ducklings were in the reeds. got close and she called them out. got closer and she took off and they started running with wings and feet over the water.
on the lightening - thunder timing, from the National Weather Service: Since you see lightning immediately and it takes the sound of thunder about 5 seconds to travel a mile, you can calculate the distance between you and the lightning. If you count the number of seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder, and then divide by 5, you'll get the distance in miles to the lightning: 5 seconds = 1 mile, 15 seconds = 3 miles, 0 seconds = very close.

saw illusion for first time and i have been rowing on that lake 15 years or so.
sea smoke
sun is rising on my right, still below tree line. so the water is in shade and the sea smoke is a gray mist.
i look left and see small irregular oval and circular bright spots on the surface of the water with what appear to be bright ghost like forms rising out of the water and up. really cool. had to figure it out
some of the houses on shore my left are just getting sun over the tree line on the opposite shore. which is reflected from some windows on those houses back and down onto the surface of the water. and up from the water surface up through the sea smoke, which is still dark except in those ghost like forms.
also an eagle hovering before dropping on some unsuspecting and unfortunate fish.

the weather has made it difficult to get anything done.
lots of rain.
we needed it, but ...
July is a bust.
we visit the babe for the next few days.

wood gleening the rubble for kindling. my least favorite stage of the job.
kinda made friends with the seller, and this year he actually brought pretty dry wood. so the bark is/has fallen off the wood in the process.
so we now have a giant pile of bark that i'm not sure what to do with and through which i have to gleen for kindling.
and the stacked stack is not as big.
it's a win, but a strange one.
