Y'all, the biarticulate inquiry led quickly into lots of talk about open and closed kinetic chain exercise. I am having trouble with the concept. First, different experts use different definitions. staff.washington.edu/griffin/knee_extensions.txtI go with McCullough in this article, although I am not sure I can tell exactly what the difference between his definition and Chek’s is. Second, although I understand that different exercises targeting the same muscle will recruit muscle and neural units differently, however subtly, I am at a loss to understand how my lats know that I am doing a pull down or a pull up. Specificity may be the answer. I’m looking to y’all for enlightenment. It’s the glut ham thing again. Is my time better spent doing specific portions of the exercise in question, or should I consider other assists ? Specifically, is the RDL more productive of better squats and deads as it seems to be the specific hip drive portion of those lifts or do you find other exercises give you greater benefit ? So to list the questions: what do you say in the okc / ckc debate ? what do you say in the specificity debate ? how are you doing ? peace, fish

Fish,I'm going to refer this one to Pam but i will add my limited 2 cents. Anything that builds the poseterior chain as you well know will improve your squats and deads. For me improving my ham strength enabled me to make some nice squat gains. I've had trouble with the deads because of my back but the RDL's definately can't hurt. Good mornings are another key exercise for strengthening the posterior chain. You just have to find your weakest point and bring it up. Sorry,I couldn't be of more help on this one.
