Taken from "The Sugar Solution"
Just giving you the highlights.
"...Just 1 ounce of one brand of chocolate has more than twice the heart healthy antioxidant punch of red wine or other dark chocolate. Dave Dark, made by Mars, contains Cocoapro cocoa, a proprietary, specially processed cocoa that contains super-high levels of antioxidant flavonoids called flavanols - so hight that Dove Dark is used in medical research. Studies have shown that people with high blood levels of flavoniods have lower risk of type 2 diabetes and heart desease..."
"...people who ate a diet rich in cocoa powder and dark chocolate had lower oxidation levels of bad LDL cholesterol, higher blood antioxidant levels, and 4 percent higher levels of good HDL cholesterol.
Here's what studies show that Cocoapro cocoa can do.
Researchers at the University of California in Davis compared the effects of 1 1/3 ounces of high-flavanol Dove Dark chocolate with the same amount of low-flavanol dark chocolate on 10 healthy people. Only the Dave Dark reduced LDL oxidation and boosted antioxidant levels and HDL concentrations in the blood.
In the test tube, Cocoapro cocoa reduces blood clotting. It may also stabilize arterial plaque, making it less likely to travel and cause a stroke or heart attack. This effect is similar to that of aspirin.
Some of the procyanidins in Cocoapro trigger the production of nitric oxide, which helps keep arteries flexible and increases bloodflow.
The chocolates with the highest cocoa content have the highest flavanol content. Two with superior levels of flavanol:
El Rey Gran Saman Dark Chocolate, 1.4 ounces, 70 percent cocoa, 190 calories, 15 grams fat.
Scharffen Berger Bittersweet, 1 ounce bar, 70 percent cocoa, 170 calories, 11 grams fat."
end quote
Well I went to Cub and looked around. I found Dove Rich Dark Chocolate. It didnt say on the bag the percentage of cocao. I also found Hershey's Extra Dark which the package says has 60% cocao.
I've heard for awhile that dark chocolate is good for you, just didnt realize how good. I like that it can reduce blood clotting. Strokes run in my family and I am allergic to asprin. So I'm going to fit this one into my diet. I'm not a real big chocolate fan and especially am not fond of dark chocolate, but I'm thinking I can choke it down with those benefits.
Just thought I'd pass that one.
Ok sucking on one of the Dove pieces right now...maybe I do like dark chocolate afterall!
