Don't know if this goes under diet or goals, but the gals will get a chuckle.
As the old timers may recall, I like my beer.
Once upon a time while I set as a goal that I would loose weight with specifics included: from 180 to 168.
This was when I had knees and wanted to be able to lift 2x body weight.
Both as a device to cut cals and as an incentive to loose weight quickly, I resolved not to drink beer until the pounds were gone.
I got down to the 168, and I got up to 355 with the trap bar.
Celebration was in order. Beer !
I have regained the weight.
I have again given up the beer.
Now for the good part.
I drink an average of 5 bottles of good beer a day. They say about 180 cals per bottle. So a conservative estimate of cals per day is 700. Could be as high as 900, but 70 is easy to divide by 35, and as we all know 3500 cals makes an lb, more or less.
I ususally give up drinking for lent anyway, just to make sure, and so I stopped my beer on Ash Wednesday. My food consumption is otherwise unchanged, if not actually reduced.
The scale says I have gained a couple of pounds.
Anything like this ever happen to any of you ?
Keep the faith,

You want to know if Smoke or I have ever gained weight after we cut calories. I think I can safely reply for both when I say, Yes, it has happened.
I don't know why though fish. Doesn't make sense but then the more I read the more complicated this whole process gets.
I went to see a nutritionist a couple of days ago. Finally! Someone who believes me when I say I am exercising and eating right. To say I learned a lot would be an understatement. It was the best thing I've ever done. I will be going back to her in a month to make sure everything is on track. She said it could get complicated but that she will get it figured out. Told her I would eat upside down naked in the front yard if she told me it would work.
Anyway back to you, all I can come up with fish is that its just a change to your body. I wonder if the beer helped metabolize the foods you ate faster?? I am stumped. Especially since you gain weight when you drink it. Lent just started, give it a bit longer and let us know what happens. I am really curious.
You know this just came to me, could you be retaining water? I've never been a big beer drinker but I know when I would I would be hitting the bathroom a lot more. Maybe try upping your water intake and see what happens. Just a thought.
By the way, nice to hear from you again.

Glad to hear you are happy with the nutritionist. I hope you discover something that works for you.
As for my situation, I never had to watch my weight. And on the two occasions when I wanted to loose a few pounds, it was relatively easy.
To take a thought from Shakespeare , they jest at scars who never felt a wound.
It is good for me to feel something of the frustration that so many other describe as they try to take off weight. I am inclined to be a little more sympathetic, and not rely on my dictum that if a person eats less and moves more, the weight will just melt away .
The problem is that so many are fooling only themselves. Have you ever noticed that so many heavy folks are constantly putting something in their mouths?
Those like you who have really tried are not believed when you truthfully say that on a 900-1200 cal diet you are not loosing weight.
As for me, it is a good idea to stop the beer for a while simply to be sure that I can. The weight will come off.
You and Smoke have a good idea with the monthly times.
I have been so depressed about my knees, and so sore, too, that my exercise has fallen to the "20 minutes three times a week" stage.
I am getting back into it, though.

So this year I decided to give up “Liquid Bread, the True Staff of Life” for the month of January. The scale again says 178 and mirrors don’t lie, and when you average 5 a day, it is good to prove a point every once in a while.
And I have been exercising. The ski machine mostly, but it has snowed, so there are the snowshoes, the snow skis, the snow blower, and the snow shovel.
So that’s at least 750 cals a day. 750 x 7 x 2 = 10,500 cals or the best part of 3 lbs.
My friends who struggle with this will smile knowingly when I report that the scale still says 178 and the mirror still refuses to lie, even a little bit.
But a review of my past posts reminds me that it takes a little time.
Sigh
But Lily the wonder dog and I went skiing and got lost in the woods today. I'm hobbling a bit right now, but it is still great exercise, and it is just so beautiful out there.
Do it while you can,

Fish do you have to travel to get to the trails or are you able to hit them right from your back door? You know I understand all too well the battle with the scale. Are you exhaling completely before you step on I have a question for you that I cant seem to find the answer too. Last time I went in to have my TSH checked an endo had ordered a serum insulin test. I didnt fast for the test, since I didnt know it was ordered, and usually they ask you to fast for any type of diabetes tests. Mine came back at 127. I know that is high but I have no idea how high and I cant seem to find what a normal range is. Would you happen to have any idea? My intial thought was to just stop looking because if I found out it was really high I would just worry until my appt which isnt until Feb 13. All other diabetes tests have come back normal so I'm not sure what to think of this. Anyway, just thought Id see if you have any information on this. Pam

Pam,
If you mean glucose levels then I have read somewhere that for males, doctors consider a glucose level of 100 or less to be normal, 101-126 to be impaired and above 126 to be diabetic.
But I thought that was for fasting test results.
If I were you and I had the opportunity, I would want apples to apples. I read your post to say that the 127 is your non-fasting number. Do you have your fasting number ?
Get them and keep them in your personal medical journal. Then you will always have context for future tests.
We ski or snowshoe from the front porch of the Kennebunkport house. The ocean is less than 5 miles from the Kennebunkport house. We canoe or kyak on the river behind the Kennebunk house. I row on the lake less than 5 miles from the Kennebunk house. We ride bikes between the houses.
It really is a nice area.

Fish, I wasnt talking about glucose levels, that one was normal. I do plan on asking them to rerun the test again when I go in. The lab has screwed up before so any results that are off I request to have rerun. Besides, I'm not sure how with something like that you could get a true reading without fasting. Depending up what you eat your insulin levels could vary greatly.
Sounds like you live in a beautiful area fish. Would love to take a trip out that way some day.
