Hey Sue and Fish,
I never did use them for walking, only for ab work so I don't really have a personal experience base. Pam says they are bad and I could see where that argument could be made.
On another note since I'm only an occasional poster, I've had a couple of squat PR's....440 & 455 and a close grip bench PR of 270.
I'll try to post more often.

Ladies,
No help for either of you here. I am ignorant of the matter.
I know that ankle weights are controversial.
I have read about speed walkers who use them to increase their rate.
I have read about martial artists who use them when kicking the heavy bag.
I have read about using them for step aerobics.
I have read about shear forces on the knees. = bad
I have read about using ankle weights in knee rehab programs. = good
So I have read all kinds of good stuff and all kinds of bad stuff about ankle weights. But I have not read anything, good or bad, about simply wearing them for an extended period of time in the course of normal activity.
As for weight reduction, some folks say that the AWs help burn cals, others that the burn increase is negligible and far outweighed by the risk of injury.
It seems to me that it requires more energy to walk with weights, so there must be a cal burn.
And if the objective is to burn a total number of cals, and if one is trying to burn a few here and a few there by resorting to such measures as drinking cold water and parking at the far end of the lot ...
And if you listen to your body, and you are hearing that your body is not being improperly stressed, then why not ?
In the absence of better information, a controlled study for example, I think the answer to your question, Smoke, is to listen to your body.
Keep the faith
fish
ps I put mine on when I am washing the outside of the upstairs windows. With more weight on my feet, I feel much less likely to fall out the window when I am sitting on the window sill, body outside, feet inside, reaching for that tough to reach spot on the window.
pps Good work, Jack !

Thx for your input..neutral as it is. I do like your reasoning for wearing them when washing windows though.
See Pam I told you they were good! lol
